Hallo,
We are trying to locate two B-24 Liberator bombers who disappeared in the clouds and probably collided over Bingen during a bombing mission on 2 December 1944.
Over the last few years we were able to establish crash locations of all other USA bombers and fighters, that were lost on that particular day, but these two B-24's carrying 21 crew members were never found.
A report in the Luftwaffe Luftgau Kommando Archives mentioned Limbach (near Idar Oberstein) as crash site, but after contacting local individuals nobody can confirm the crash and no debris and / or human remains were located.
A low flying fighter noticed three big aircraft pieces failing out of the fog close to the target Bingen, so we think that maybe parts of one or both planes fell in the Rhine river.
